Disabled volunteers from Healthwatch Camden and Camden Disability Action visited 28 community centres in Camden, to check how accessible they are to a range of people with disabilities.

We wanted to do this because Camden Council’s strategy for disabled and older people says it will “use community resources first” when developing solutions to peoples’ support needs. This includes “tackling barriers to accessing community facilities”. We wanted to find out how realistic it would be for someone with a disability to use the local community centres and to share this information with Camden council and local disabled people.

We wanted to find out the health and social care issues young people aged fifteen to sixteen in Camden think are important to their demographic and also to find out how they like to be communicated to by health professionals and teachers. To this end we devised a Youth Social Media campaign week. It is a pilot campaign using videos developed by school children from William Ellis School and LaSWAP sixth form consortium.

Healthwatch Camden co-ordinated work by five local Healthwatch organisations, in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington to help local residents have a say in plans for urgent and emergency care in North London.

Local Healthwatch from the five boroughs organised surveys, focus groups and interviews to find out what local people think of existing services and to get their ideas on how to make services better. We sought out people who don’t always get heard, in particular people from minority communities, and people living in residential care. We spoke to patients and carers, young and old.

We helped local residents and service providers to share their ideas on improving services and work out some action plans. These plans are now being used as the guide to future work on urgent and emergency care.

The Camden and Islington NHS Trust is currently considering a proposal for the redevelopment of St Pancras Hospital. We know that changes to a service can be difficult for patients, carers and staff. Healthwatch Camden has been talking to people who use the in-patient service currently located at St Pancras to find out what the proposed changes will mean for them.
